We are consistency! As each year finalizes and we step back to take a breath, it is always a huge sense of satisfaction to produce the game Bucks & Bulls does for their hunters. 2013 was no different. Plus the highlights are always fun to reminisce about. Such as antelope bucks that reach high into the Boone & Crockett. Two 88″ bucks and one 87″ buck were the stars of the show in New Mexico.
One buck in particular harvested by Mr. Brian King and guided by Travis Adams had horn lengths of 19 1/8 “… That’s the longest set of antelope horns that Bucks & Bulls has ever harvested. Then we move to some great fair chase bull elk. Seems lately that the 500″-600″+ bull elk being shot out of some kind of inclosure and the fair chase bunch are splitting the sportsman into two different groups. Those that kill an animal raised in captivity and shot for the bragging rights in pictures and the water cooler gossip and those who look at the hunt as 90% of the feeling they are searching for. Well Bucks & Bulls has some of the best quality fair chase elk in the west. These hunts are not for the weak of heart and short on time. These hunts may take several days and put blisters on your feet to hunt that fair chase elk. If that is your style of hunting, congratulations you get it. Bucks & Bulls across the board had a 98.6% harvest rate and of those bulls the average score was 338”. Now that might not sound to impressive with all those 500″ captivity bulls but I think our hunts are a true “You never know” type of hunt. I know one thing, We really have to hunt these animals with extreme caution. One bump of that 10+ year old trophy and he may be in the next county or just simply go under ground. You never know, FAIR CHASE. Makes it interesting and fulfilling. Mule deer took one more small step into recovery. with 14 bucks over 180″ we were pleased and sad at the same time. The mule deer is on a very slow recovery and the management as a whole in Bucks & Bulls opinion needs a serious restructure across the west. We will see how 2014’s report goes.
We will pick up where we left off with the mule deer. For 2014, another improvement in quality for trophy bucks. 17 bucks over 180″, 7 over 190″ and 1 over 200″. Slow but sure the mule deer are trying to get back to the days of old. More very serious predator control needs to take place over the entire west and a huge cut in the hunting of November bucks! That’s right, we are full time outfitters and would take a financial hit without November buck hunts. We feel it is by far the best thing to do in the west for mule deer quality and are willing to do our part for the future. Our elk hunts were as strong as ever. One ranch had an average age of 10.9 years old. Lightning struck twice in 2 years with Brian King harvesting a tremendous animal with Bucks & Bulls, his first elk going 395″. Might be his best of a lifetime. We shall see. Antelope for Bucks & Bulls just keeps getting better. We started a predator control program a few years back and its spectacular! In a nut shell, 11 bucks were harvested with an average Boone & Crockett score of 84″. That is one area that may get even better for Bucks & Bulls for several years to come.
